A note from Gigi about 5Rhythms®
®5Rhythms® dance and movement meditation is a place to bring everything that you are into a safe space, to move it and let it transform.
For me, this journey began when I started a shamanic dance and movement practice after the death of my three year old daughter saw me needing a place to move my grief and I found it on the dance floor.
I started Sacred Grooves in my little hometown of Huskisson and was surprised when every week more people kept showing up to move what was true for them. I was humbled by their courage and honesty and wisdom. We all just kept moving and learning and growing. In the process the conscious dance community here grew.
I have spent a lifetime unwinding bodies through myofascial release, breathwork and craniosacral therapy, and have discovered there is a pattern for this unwinding process which can be unlocked and unblocked by moving and breathing. All you have to do is follow what your body is telling you. So the first Sacred Grooves classes followed what I knew from all those hours holding space for people as they processed through breath and the body. Get out of the way. Breathe. Pay attention. Move what you feel rather than worrying about how you look. Keep moving, even if it is just your fingertips. Have faith in the wisdom of your own instincts. If you can walk, you can dance.
The beautiful thing about movement meditation is that you need no experience whatsoever. Simply a love of movement and a desire to express yourself in a safe space to some great music.
After a while I kept hearing about a dance and movement meditation called 5Rhythms®, which was developed by an amazing woman named Gabrielle Roth who began her work in Esalen. She was a visionary, and I am so sad that I didn’t get to meet her before she died six years ago. She tracked and mapped human healing through movement for decades, and opened up this practice for thousands of people all over the world. 5Rhythms® exists now in 80 countries. You can pretty much get off a plane anywhere and go into a 5Rhythms® class.
I did my first workshop with her son Jonathon Horan and fell instantly in love with this practice. I have spent 30 years sitting with amazing healers all over the world, collecting what works and bringing it back. In that first workshop I felt a huge wave of relief. 5Rhythms® works. So in the years since then I have done pretty much every 5Rhythms workshop possible, and applied to the teacher training programme, and was accepted.
So now I teach 5Rhythms®; this sophisticated yet extremely simple practice which allows anyone, everyone, to find their own perfect dance, without need for comparison or judgement. This is a timeless unlocking, a remembering of who and what we truly are.
Humans have been dancing since the dawn of time. Sure, now we do it with speakers and playlists, but in the wisdom of our bones is an ancient birthright, and when we move this part of us activates and we come home to ourselves. And when everything lines up inside us and for a moment or a song or an hour we are truly danced; when the beat takes us, and the movement is something unstoppable that blows through us like a wind from far places or a wave crashing, or our own private earthquake that levels that which is ready to fall and leaves us tender and new; then we can lose ourselves in the mystery and remember that we are made of stars.
If you’re worried because you have never danced like this before, please, right now, let go that voice. Your body can move, of course it can. You can let fall the shackles of self judgement and comparison and discover a freedom of expression that is yours and yours alone. Everyone can dance. Everyone can move. The ancient wisdom in your bones is far smarter than your head trying to figure it out. There is nothing to figure out. Just let go into the current of your instincts and your body will do the rest. It doesn’t matter how you look. It’s irrelevant. What matters is freeing that part of you that has been trapped and stuck, and giving yourself permission to be who you truly are.
You’re beautiful.
